European Human Genetics Conference 2010 - June 12 - 15 - Gothenburg, Sweden
- As the Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetic service technologies are now merging closer, perhaps now is the time to provide an integrated lab service?
- Increased workload for diagnostic labs and increased complexity of cases requiring interpretation.
- Impact on training? Still need the specialist discipline training and the new technologies (for follow up and for some referrals, this technology is not appropriate).
- Clinical Genetic services will need to expand or differentiate their services to cope with the increased complexity of cases and volume of work.
- Reliability of results (sensitivity/predictive value)? The impact from private companies offering multifactorial genetic testing via the internet on clinical services? Issues on clinical utility as well as referral to clinical genetic services.
- Informing patients and the public at large on pros and cons of testing.
- Disclosure of genetic information to the patient - everything or selective?
- Accreditation, self-regulation, evidence based medicine?
- Biobanks and clinical services are merging closer. What does that mean for regulation, re-contacting, informed decision making?

Dear participant
Thank you for having registered for the ESHG 2010 in Gothenburg. We would like to keep you informed on several issues, among them a number of satellite meetings, scheduled immediately ahead of the ESHG meeting, notably the ESHG satellites:
- "Changing Landscape of Genetic testing and its impact on clinical and laboratory services and research in Europe"
- "International Workshop on Early History of Human Molecular Genetics".
and the
- "Hands-on workshop "Browsing Genes and Genomes with Ensembl"
More information can be found below.
Finally we would also want to remind you of the upcoming deadline for guaranteed hotel booking on April 12, 2010.
We look forward to seeing you in Gothenburg in June.

One day symposium
Changing landscape of genetic testing and its impact on clinical and laboratory services and research in Europe.
June 11th 2010, Gothenburg, Sweden
The application of the new genetic technologies (array CGH, whole genome sequencing), that examine the human genome, will have an impact on both laboratories (cytogenetic and molecular genetics in first instance) and clinical/medical genetic services. There is a need to discuss how best to re-structure the services logistically and determine clinical utility of genetic testing so that patients can receive appropriate advice and genetic testing. For example:
This symposium composes of two parts, presentations discussing the multiple implications of these new technologies, followed by workshops to discuss ways forward to improve and adapt the genetic services so that patients receive accurate and relevant information.

HISTORICAL WORKSHOP ON THE ORIGINS OF HUMAN MOLECULAR GENETICS
June 11-12 2010, Gothenburg, Sweden
The updated programme has been posted on the website:
https://www.eshg.org/satmeetings.0.html
Of course registration is still open.
Any enquiries can be made to Joanne Richards, Genetic and Medicine Historical Network coordinator (richardsje2(at)cf.ac.uk).
The organising group look forward to seeing as many as possible of you in Gothenburg!
The Ensembl Outreach team is pleased to offer a 1-day Ensembl genome browser workshop as a satellite to ESHG 2010. This workshop offers participants the possibility of gaining lots of hands-on experience in the use of the Ensembl genome browser but also provides them with the necessary background information. The workshop is primarily targeted at wetlab researchers. Participants are encouraged to bring problems/questions about their research to try to tackle these during the workshop using Ensembl. The only prerequisite for the workshop is a general knowledge of molecular biology / genomics and a familiarity with web browsers. The workshop will be held on Friday 11 June at Gothenburg University and is free of charge for conference participants. Places are limited to 30 participants. More details and how to register can be found at http://www.ensembl.org/info/about/outreach/ehgc_2010.html.
Already booked your room for ESHG 2010?
As it is, June is already an extremely busy season in Gothenburg and many of the hotels are already fully or very heavily booked.

Changing Landscape of Genetic Testing

There is a need to discuss how best to re-structure the services logistically and determine clinical utility of genetic testing so that patients can receive appropriate advice and genetic testing. For example:
This symposium composes of two parts, presentations discussing the multiple implications of these new technologies, followed by workshops to discuss ways forward to improve and adapt the genetic services so that patients receive accurate and relevant information.
